I have to say – I’m hooked on Software as a Service (SaaS). I’ve been using quite a few services personally, but I know I’m truly hooked when I refuse to use anything not offered as SaaS for my web application. If it isn’t as easy as adding in a Javascript tag or calling a simple REST API, I won’t use it unless it is truly compelling.
Here is an example: NewsInjector. NewsInjector tries to solve a problem I currently have – the need to provide news snippets to the users of my application without spending the time to code it by hand. The problem? I have to install a Java-based server just to get it to work. Here is a screenshot from the tour:

I agree that SaaS is getting more important every day.
When I started development of NewsInjector I had to decide if I do it as a service or a product. I decided to develop a product first and later start to offer it as a service. Some businesses may do not like the idea that their internal news reside somewhere on the web and are served from there. They better have them on their intranet.
I am about to release NewsInjector v1.2 and then will decide the next steps. SaaS will definetely be somewhere on the top of the todo list but it might take a while to offer it.
