[...] The reason I even mention this article is that this was a subject of a recent post on this blog. Techdirt doesn’t get the issue, since the issue isn’t about the mp3 format, it is about the dynamic range of the music (aka audio compression, not to be confused with data compression that mp3s are known for).
Andrew,

I can sympathize - I had a software RAID 1 fail as well, but it was due to a bad hardware controller (fried both drives at once), not due to the software RAID itself. Since then, I make sure to invest in reliable drive controllers first. The Slashdot article I mentioned talked about the downside of hardware RAID, as well as the upside, and is a great reference for making an informed decision either way.

And, as you mentioned, RAID 1 is not a backup solution, only a n availability solution.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I have had a software RAID 1 mirror that I was running on CentOS fail on me. Unfortunately we did not have proper backups so we decided to try to restore. One drive had completely failed and the other was only slightly corrupted, but the data was in such a logical mess that even hard drive recovery experts couldn't get the data out. I definitely think it is worth the extra investment in hardware raid, simply to reduce complexity.

That's the truth! As an ex-java bean/servlet developer I can now laugh at the enormous complexities of it all. All that architecture purity comes at the cost of taking 4x longer to develop apps.

Bob,

Without more information it may be hard to determine the problem. Just make sure that you have read all of the links that I referenced in my post, and be sure that you apply my fix only if you are running rails from under vendor, rather than as a gem.

I'm trying your fix, but I still get the same error, when running inside rails. Standalone works fine. Any guesses?

Thanks!
