The Human Touch

Entrepreneurship, General Development

Simon Yorke, who builds record players in his shop in Spain, on why he doesn’t use machines to create his record players:

“We make everything by hand. Yes, we have machines; we have test operators. But, we make everything by hand. Why? If you manufacture everything, in a factory, using computers, everything comes out exactly the same. It lacks a human touch, it’s just another product. Yes, we have to make a profit, we have to live. But we don’t do what we do to simply make a profit; we do it because there is something rewarding in it. It’s an honorable thing, I believe, to do, in a world, which, isn’t terribly honorable. People are completely obsessed with the gadgets of today - download everything, instantly. Music has become nothing more than toilet paper. I want to change that. I like the idea of craftsmanship, that the people who work have some reward in what they do.”

This is why I love to write software, and why I’m always looking for both others to share in the passion and rewards of software development. I’m also looking to work for companies that share this passion, to build something great that has a human touch.
