iPhone users: Prepare yourselves

AT&Tisms, iPhone

I just received this letter in the mail last week (click to view the large version) regarding AT&T sharing information with third-parties (personal information removed):

AT&T CPNI Letter

One of my (many) favorite parts:

To allow AT&T to use your CPNI, no further action is required.

CPNI, or Customer Proprietary Network Information, is your phone usage and other statistics (they confirmed this for me on their recorded message when opting out) but not your phone number or address. So, lucky you, your usage patterns will be shared with others with no action on your part!

So, if you just purchased an iPhone, beware of what you are getting yourself into. Plus, a post from Guy Kawasaki about a recent AT&T DSL issue will provide some background on the fun to be had also.

Of course, my research time has been limited, so proper due diligence on your part may be required for proper understanding (I’m not a lawyer, yadda yadda).

Now, when is another phone company going to come to Austin so that I can dump AT&T?
